Quality pay for quality care

Our industry is in crisis. Many businesses have experienced firsthand the shortage of workers in today’s economy; however, when we are short staffed, the disabled community suffers tremendously. Our current employees are putting in extra hours and fighting to make ends meet. And while it is heroic and necessary, it shouldn’t be. This is where mistakes can happen and crisis begins.

On May 24, Community Services for Every1 joined its Developmental Disabilities Alliance of Western New York (DDAWNY) peers to sound the alarm to New York State. We are no longer asking for funds, we are demanding a living wage that is just and equal to the work that is required. Our industry has not seen a fair adjustment in over a decade, all while legislators fight for a higher wage for fast food workers – a wage higher than what they allocate for our direct support professionals. It’s discriminatory and unjust.

This crisis isn’t going away without the State’s intervention. Until we see change, this movement is only the beginning. We ask our friends, followers, and supporters to join us in sounding the alarm. We are in crisis. Please help us! Call on the Governor and ask your State Representatives for a 35% increase for direct support professionals. We need to start providing quality pay for quality care!

Easy Eats for Every1 kicks off

With our new Culinary Arts Coordinator in place, Meredith Schork, we have hit the ground running. Our project is layered with learning opportunities for both people we support and our DSPs.

We have launched Easy Eats for Every1, which is our take on Hello Fresh. It offers healthy meals available in one of three options:

  • Heat and Eat – Ready for the microwave/oven.
  • Prepped just Prepare – Everything is measured and chopped, it just needs to be  put together. Great for people who want to learn to cook but haven’t mastered some of the basics.
  • From Scratch – Raw ingredients typical to the Hello Fresh model.

Each healthy meal kit comes with written instructions and a QR code to our Easy Eats for Every1 YouTube channel. Here, Chef Meredith provides a tutorial for people we support on how to prepare your kit. This allows anyone we support to try a healthy meal while working on skills for independent living.

All of this is done within our culinary classroom with those we support in Employment Services. Having a true demand for prepping, cooking, and portioning allows for authentic learning and work experiences.

Our first Easy Eats kit was 150 Thanksgiving meals for people we support. It was delivered to those living in the community that were alone for the first time, families that didn’t have the means to cook all the fixings, and to some of the folks and staff in our IRAs. The menu included: turkey breast, stuffing, mashed potatoes, mac and cheese, green beans, roll, and homemade sweet potato pie.

We recently featured a two-ingredient pizza dough packed with protein. We have 50 people we support receiving the Heat and Eat option and 148 people receiving the Prepped just Prepare kits.

Recently, Community Prevoc made 1,200 cookies to be packaged into cookie kits just in time for the holidays. In addition to the traditional sugar cookie cut-outs, there was a gluten-free/vegan option.

We hope to continue this model and expand the kits being available to all the people we support and staff.

Adopt a Family Campaign brings cheer to families

Like many events this year, our Adopt a Family campaign looked a little different. To follow safety guidelines, we did not do the Holiday Store this year, but had each of our families adopted by our generous donors. Donors adopted more than 50 families this holiday season to help more than 200 people have a brighter holiday.

We would like to thank our amazing individual donors as well as M&T Bank, Molly and Kate, and Hamburg Schools. We would also like to thank Barb Burgstahler for once again donating her beautiful handmade blankets.

Our Adopt a Family Campaign is one of our favorite traditions at Community Services, and we are thrilled that the WNY community has once again shared their generosity to make this holiday season merry and bright for so many families. We cannot thank you enough!

Hospitality cohort completes hybrid course with amazing results

On October 5, we continued our partnership with The Service Collaborative of WNY, Inc. (TSC), and began a hybrid model hospitality course, teaching a certified curriculum through the American Hotel and Lodging Education Institute (AHLEI) in Guest Services Gold: Golden Opportunities.

The course was 10-weeks and 11 students were enrolled. Students were in the classroom one day a week, and then participated in remote learning for the rest of the week. The instructor taught a small morning class and a small afternoon class on Mondays, each with 5 or 6 students. This was to ensure the appropriate health and safety COVID protocols were being followed. Students completed a health assessment when entering the Jefferson Career Center, wore masks while in the classroom, and worked to keep their assigned desk areas clean.

In the classroom, focusing on concepts such as personalization, inclusion, and commitment, students were not only learning the skills necessary to provide outstanding Guest Services but also the skills needed to be successful in the workplace. Students were given opportunities to participate in fun and creative assignments that reinforced these concepts and skills. During the rest of the week, students were given weekly work packets to complete at home and participated in weekly one on one phone and/or Zoom calls with the instructor. While this was a new and different situation for everyone, the students excelled. They worked hard, always communicated with the instructor, and never complained.

When the November 18th announcement came that we were entering the Orange Zone, students went fully remote. This was incredibly sad news but, again, the students were so resilient. They worked with the instructor and TSC staff to coordinate drop-off times for their work packets, participated in weekly class Zoom calls, tried their best to ensure their work was completed on time, and quickly learned the online learning system through AHLEI in order to take their certification exam. These were no easy tasks with all of the changes happening around them.

Not only did the students find ways to work through the challenges the world threw at us and complete the course, but all of them passed the online certification exam with amazing results.

We are so proud of their accomplishments and are grateful to them for giving us a fun sense of normalcy during a very challenging and odd time in this world. We wish them nothing but the best in their future endeavors and have no doubt that they will continue to add to their list of accomplishments.

Federal funding announced to assist survivors of domestic violence

Congressman Brian Higgins joined Community Services for Every1 and the Family Justice Center to announce two federal grants from the Department of Justice totaling $875,000 earlier this month.

The first grant, totaling $550,000, provides resources for transitional housing and support services for individuals escaping domestic violence. The second grant, in the amount of $325,000, supports WNY’s first ever domestic violence program designed to help survivors with a disability.

The Transitional Housing Grant will provide housing and services for survivors of domestic violence, dating violence, sexual assault and stalking. Grant funds for our Victim Assistance Program will focus on providing person-centered services assisting each individual’s needs on a case by case basis. Supports will include rent and utility assistance, case management, safety planning, childcare, counseling, support groups, legal assistance and more.

Our Victim Assistance Program is the first of its kind in WNY to specialize in providing services to people with an intellectual or developmental disability who are survivors of domestic violence. People with a disability are three times more likely to experience domestic violence or abuse in their lifetime than someone who does not have a disability.

Community Services and the Family Justice Center discovered that the region was lacking in the appropriate resources to help survivors with a disability, so they formed the collaboration known as HOPE of WNY. With the help of these two grants, HOPE of WNY will be able to assist even more survivors in getting the help they need.

For individuals who may have been victims of domestic violence, Community Services and the Family Justice Center can provide assistance by contacting 716-558-SAFE.

Out of the Blue plans festive holiday lunch

In December, our wonderful partners at Out of the Blue WNY held their annual holiday lunch for nearly 200 people we support.

Niagara Frontier American Legion Post 1041 was very generous in donating their hall free of charge to host the event. People were able to sing karaoke, socialize, and eat a delicious meal from Cabaret’s. Volunteers from Out of the Blue helped serve food and spent time getting to know some of the people we serve.

Santa and Mrs. Claus also made a visit, helping our Service Collaborative student volunteers serve cookies after lunch. DSP Michael Cirrito also spread some holiday cheer by playing some holiday carols on his trumpet, encouraging everyone to sing along.

We a so grateful to Out of the Blue for arranging this as well as American Legion for hosting us!

Adopt a Family Holiday Store another success

Holiday spirit was in the air as we held our second Adopt a Family Holiday Store in December. We collected gift donations from several generous donors and set up a store at our 1845 Kenmore location to give families the opportunity to shop for gifts.

Thanks to our incredible donors, we were able to provide gifts to more than 150 children this year! In addition to picking out gifts, families were able to choose a homemade blanket as a family gift. Our volunteers helped families shop as well as wrap presents. Those who could not attend the event had gifts dropped off by our employees.

We would like to thank M&T Bank, Sweet Charlotte’s, BlueCross BlueShield of WNY, Millard Fillmore Surgery Center LLC, WNY Urology, Bath Fitter, Hamburg Schools and all of our employees and board members who donated. We would also like to thank everyone who gave monetary donations as well as Barb Burgstahler for making all the blankets for the families.

Finally, we would like to extend a big thank you to our volunteers who helped make this year’s holiday store possible. We can’t wait to get started on next year’s event!

Prenatal class helps prepare expectant mothers

Last month, Community Services began offering prenatal classes thanks to the support of a mini-grant. The goal of these classes is to keep families together, support the mother and baby in a healthy pregnancy, help and empower families in decision making, and to educate and prepare parents for a new baby.

The classes take place at the Jefferson Career Exploration Center and are facilitated by Angel Kulczyk, a certified doula. Topics covered in the classes include how to create a birth plan, car seat safety, healthy relationships, breastfeeding and bottle feeding, yoga, deep breathing exercises, and more techniques to help expectant mothers.

Jaime, a class participant, is a first-time mom expecting a baby girl in August. She said the prenatal classes have helped her to prepare and get the supplies she needs. She is looking forward to welcoming the new baby.

“I can’t wait,” she said. “My family is throwing me a shower next month and they’re really excited.”

We are thrilled to be able to provide a program like this to help families.

Out of the Blue dishes out cool treats

Recently, people we support got a sweet treat thanks to Out of the Blue WNY. Out of the Blue arranged for Anderson’s Food Truck to make a stop at our Jefferson Career Exploration Center and serve up some ice cream for people in our programs.

About 100 people had their choice of a variety of flavors, such as Graham Cracker Crunch and Mint Chocolate Chip, or they could order sundaes, milkshakes or frozen yogurt. Out of the Blue provided drinks as well. Despite a few rain showers, everyone had a great time eating their treats, catching up with friends and dancing to music. Thank you Out of the Blue for everything that you do for our agency and the people we support!

First hospitality training course at Jefferson a success

Our first hospitality training class graduated in June at our Jefferson Career Exploration Center. In partnership with The Service Collaborative of WNY Inc., we started our first cohort of classes in April with a small group of students to provide them with the opportunity to explore careers in the hospitality industry and develop the skills needed for specific jobs in that field.

The classes focus on two main areas of hospitality: housekeeping attendant and front desk representative. Classes are held four days a week at Jefferson and instructed by Joelle Amico, our Hospitality Workforce Development Specialist. A certified curriculum is used to guide the classes and teach students the fundamentals of the hospitality industry.

“The students who have signed up for these classes want to better themselves and want to explore the opportunities that are available to them,” Joelle said.

Over the duration of the course, students received hands-on practice in our mock hotel room at Jefferson, toured hotels in the Western New York area, and had the chance to job shadow professionals in the field.

A small graduation ceremony was held in June where students were presented with their certifications from the American Hotel & Lodging Association. We are thrilled that our first class passed their testing with flying colors and look forward to working with our next group of students!
