Are you welcoming to people with disabilities? Are you ADA compliant? It’s more than a power door and a large stall!
Do you practice universal accessibility? No one gets a pat on the back for being ADA compliant. The expectation is the concept of universal accessibility, which benefits everyone.
If your responsibilities call for serving the general public and you are not universally accessible, let alone ADA compliant, you are NOT welcoming to the disability community and those with functional limitations. You have barriers that do not allow individuals with disabilities to access your needed services. Simply put, you are discriminating against persons with disabilities and others with functional limitations. You may also face Civil Penalties and Compensatory Damages imposed on businesses for violating the ADA. The maximum civil penalty for a first-time violation is $75,000, while subsequent violations carry a maximum fine of $150,000.
The good news is there is an opportunity for you to have an accessibility review at no cost. Even better, we’ll give you a stipend to provide it at your agency of $1,500 to help get you started! The first step to accessibility is a Self-Evaluation that will lead to your Transition Plan. This will guide you through the barriers inhibiting your agency and the steps that need to be taken to become accessible. Areas that you will need to become compliant include, but are not limited to, Parking, Entrances, Restrooms, primary areas of facilitation, Communication, policies, and websites. The Guidance will direct you to tools and resources that assist you in executing your Transition Plan.
In order to be eligible for this free accessibility review and guidance documents register for our upcoming “Breaking Down Barriers Understanding and Implementation of Universal Accessibility” training. The cost of this training is $50.00 per attendee.
This training will define those barriers, introduce initiatives to address deficiencies, and provide guidance on how to embrace universal accessibility. The objective is Inclusivity as a standard practice. Content will include general effective communication, universal design/accessibility, application of the Americans with Disabilities Act, and language/etiquette and interaction skills.
